Creating a sense of home and belonging is often an important factor when creating designs for spaces, that are meant to make people feel comfortable and motivate people to spend a longer amount of time in these spaces. In a Branding Class I took in the Fall 2016 semester, we were given the assignment to create a coffee shop that was supposed to make people of the future, having relocated to Mars, at home, with those people presumably missing earth. However this can be translated to any environment that was not usually inhabited by humans, a notion that will without a doubt become more and more important, with the ever increasing human population on earth.
I therefore decided to create the concept for a coffee shop named “House of Seasons”, strongly focusing on the passing of seasons, and therefore designed for environments that don’t have the classical central european seasons that are considered “standard” in Western societies. The coffee shop changes throughout the year, not just through the venue itself, but through cup and menu designs, as well as cultural events that will take place in the coffee shop, all inspired by “traditional” seasons.
